Characteristics of a Professional Bartender – A Guide

If you are thinking that being a bartender is a simple job then you can start thinking otherwise. This is not simply a job that requires mixing drinks that are pleasant to the taste bud of the customers. Bartenders need to be a lot of things in a lot of ways in order to be great at his or her skill. Being able to create magical drinks is already a given fact because you cannot be a bartender if you do not know how to make basic drink recipes. You also need to be flexible and have developed organizational skills. This is essential because the people you meet will vary. You may be serving an ordinary office worker who simply wants a soothing drink after a long day’s work then you may be facing the president the next!

Some people can be friendly and patient while some can be grumpy and have a lot of complaints about their drinks. You should also have great communication skills. Choosing the right words will always ease the person in front of you regardless of the predicament. Even if you are unable to give them what they want, you will be able to convince them to have something else if you have great communication skills which also translates to customer service.

Multitasking is also a talent that should be present if you want to be a successful bartender. You should be able to perform several tasks at once and have trained your brain in a way that it is able to handle a lot of things going on at the same time. Like remembering multiple drink orders, wiping the bar, using the proper glasses appropriate to the drink that was ordered, and many more. It is never simply tending the bar because being a great bartender requires special skills, talent and lots of practical training. In other words, the best way to learn how to bartend is to first study and gain some level of knowledge but then you must get behind a bar and actually serve people. Some people are already great at it but some really exerted effort to acquire these because of their passion for the job. Whatever the case may be, it will be well worth the effort to attain this new skill and there is also a lot of fun involved in being a bartender!
